Ignition Interlock Installation | Vermont

      What is Ignition Interlock Installation?

Ignition interlock installation is what you have to go through when you’ve been ordered to install an IID. It’s a device that’s installed in your vehicle to prevent you from drinking and driving. The ignition interlock connects to the engine and controls the power and control circuits. In order to enable these circuits and thus be able to turn on and drive your car, you have to pass a breathalyzer test. If your Breath Alcohol Content, or BrAC, is within a preset limit the car will start. If the device detects an amount over that limit, the ignition will remain locked and the failed test will be recorded in compliance with legal requirements. You will have to install an ignition interlock device on every car you plan to drive during your time in the ignition interlock program.

Vermont Laws Regarding Ignition Interlock Installation

In Vermont, the ignition interlock installation is mandated via a court order. Vermont law states that your license will be suspended even after a first offense. You have to serve out 30 days of your license suspension. However, after those 30 days, you may be able to apply for a restricted license and install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle. This can enable you to restore some of your driving privileges while you’re serving out your suspension. You will have to pay $125 for the license, and depending on your specific situation you may also have to attend alcohol treatment courses, provide proof of financial responsibility via an SR-22 form, and complete other actions as assigned by your court order. Consult with your attorney for the most accurate information as it applies to your particular case.
